Why It’s Important to Make Decisions from Inner Peace, Not Fear?

“The most terrible things in the world are done with a serious face.”

This quote by director and philosopher Tarkovsky serves as a warning and seems to explain much of what’s happening around us, doesn’t it?

Conflicts, toxic relationships, broken families, ruined lives — if you take a closer look, behind most destructive decisions stands a person with grim determination on his face. No doubt, no smile. However, his eyes blaze with fear.

Since childhood, we are taught that being serious means being an adult. Jokes or lightness are “unacceptable” when it comes to something “important.” In reality, it’s often during the most serious moments that a person strays farthest from common sense and inner clarity.

I’d like to point out that emotions themselves are not bad. However, if we break down the cycle of action, it becomes clear: first comes observation, then decision, and only then—action. When someone starts this cycle with negative emotions, there’s a slim chance for constructive results.

When viewed through anxiety or anger, the world appears hostile, limited, and narrow. Distortion occurs at the observation stage: we see not reality but its “compressed” version, filtered through fear. Decisions made in this state are almost always confusing, and actions tend to be destructive.

That’s why the most important thing is to rise above emotions, especially before making serious decisions. It’s not about suppressing feelings; it’s about preventing them from being the initial trigger that sets everything in motion.

Of course, it’s not always easy to find inner peace. Sometimes, it feels like there’s no time to “calm down.” But remember: one impulsive step can initiate a whole chain of events, each requiring new decisions, new resources, and possibly new regrets.
